THE SINGING CREEL FAMILY from Old County Line Church-Corner Community, Alabama

The Creel Family Singers

James Harris Reid, known to the public as singing Jim, was born January 26, 1872. He was married to Margaret Jane Yarborough. He lived most of his life in Blount County, worked for a time for L&N Railroad, and then farmed. He was a lover of Sacred Harp singing, having attended eight days' singing school to the late Tom Denson. After that time he began teaching singing schools walking from Reid's Gap to Mount Zion Church. He also taught schools at Shady Grove (Cullman County), McCormack's (Liberty), Little Vine, and the last school he taught was at a church at Frog Ridge. He was an honest, upright man and the father of six children, four of whom lived to adulthood. They were Anne Reid (Mrs. Charlie Creel) whose children are Pauline Murphree, Marie Aldridge, Lucile Tolbert, Edith Tate, Harrison, and Haydn Creel; Mamie Reid (Mrs. Chester P. Creel) whose children are Audry, Seldon, and Aaron Creel; Mattie Reid (Mrs. Hester H. Creel) whose children are Kathleen Robbins, Juanita Robbins, and Doyle Creel; and Emory Reid (Gladys Willoughby) whose children are Latrelle Sewell, Jane Taer, Willie, Talmadge, and Jim Reid.

James Harris Reid helped organize the Mulberry River Convention in 1905 at Old County Line Church and was the first vice president of the convention. He also helped write the constitution. He passed away at the early age of forty seven years, but he instilled the love for Sacred Harp music in the hearts ad minds of his children who in turn passed it on to their children and grandchildren many of whom travel far and wide today singing the praises of the Lord in Sacred Harp singing. The Creel family enjoy mingling their voices with friends and loved ones as often as possible. Mr. and Mrs. Reid and Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Creel are laid to rest in the cemetery at Old County Line Church.
