Eastbound Expressway [Full Album + Bonus] (1979)

Playing Next: Joy Division - Atrocity Exhibition, Live In Paris (1979) [FULL ALBUM]

Eastbound Expressway was a studio project that started its life in 1976 when producer Ian Levine cut two tracks Danger Zone and Cloudburst that he wanted to release under the moniker Ian Levine And The Sounds Of Summer. PYE Records did not like the name, and so the first single Danger Zone was released under the name Eastbound Expressway in October 1976. Cloudburst followed on Cooltempo in August 1977, none of the singles becoming hits.

By 1978 Ian Levine had recorded an album with singer James Wells which was remixed by Rick Gianatos who hated Well's wailing vocal on the track Never Let Go so much that he took it off and was left with a backing-vocals only track. With Wells' My Claim To Fame album taking off big time, Never Let Go was put out as an Eastbound Expressway single and gave Levine another big disco record, leading to AVI Records asking a full album.

When Levine delivered an album called Under Hypnosis, AVI did not want anything to do with it at first as they felt the album had nothing to do with the Never Let Go single. Rick Gianatos persuaded them to release it under a different name - it came out as Croisette instead and gave Levine another dance smash - and instead Levine recorded two new tracks, Turn Back The Tide and Better Look Before You Leap which were paired with Never Let Go and a remixed Cloudburst for this LP that was released 1979.

I have included the fully unedited version of Turn Back The Tide which has never been released anywhere before. It runs a full 3 minutes longer than the album version.

Eastbound Expressway were revived as a proper girl group in 1983 and had several successful Hi-NRG singles like Primitive Desire and Frantic Love on Record Shack Records, and You're A Beat, Knock Me Senseless and Rainstorm on Passion Records, and their final single Whiplash on Levine's own Nightmare Records in 1989.
