The well-known folklorists Iona and Peter Opie have divided children’s songs into three categories: those taught to children by adults, those taught by children to other children and songs written commercially for children. The songs in our compilation are mostly drawn from the first category: those that are known in the UK as nursery rhymes and in the US as Mother Goose rhymes. We have also included a few commercially written songs from the third category. Most of the rhymes were deliberately constructed to have NO sense. That is their very essence and what makes them so wonderful!
