One thing you'll note if you play DQ5 is that the hero's luck stat typically doesn't rise when he levels up. Luck is normally a \"gameplay-only\" stat that has no implications on plot, but if you think about all the stuff that happens to Dragon Quest 5's hero over the course of the game, it makes a surprising amount of sense why he has such low luck (and also why all of Akira Toriyama's drawings of the DQ5 hero as an adult feature him frowning or grimacing.)
