On paper, this album looks pretty boring. Piano, Bass, Drums. An occasional bit of percussion. Somehow Mr Hill turns the ordinary into something special. At times playful and other times as serious as a funeral, β€œSo In Love” captures what is great about jazz; the spontaneous mixture of celebration and suffering that every honest human being can relate to. It’s rare that a piano can take the lead for an entire album and remain interesting without any backing vocals for support, but Andrew manages to speak in wild directions. This was his first album as bandleader, and he was definitely out to prove a point. There are no special effects or electronics on this one, just organic combinations of mind and matter. Spring is here
