TL;DR: Music noob remastered the album 3 times before realizing his spotify settings were set to cap audio quality at 24kbps.
All in all this was a harrowing experience and I'm glad it's over, but I learned a lot lot lot about mixing and mastering and I am much more skilled at it now compared to when I started. I ran the learn-on-the-fly gauntlet!
I basically started off with no technical knowledge at all, barely an understanding of basic EQ principles. Half way through recording the tracks and trying to mix and master them as I went along, I had to remaster everything from the start to apply what I had learned thus far. At the end of the whole album was the same thing, but with the entire album.
Once uploaded, I started hearing horrible audio quality on Spotify, and tried to convince myself it was paranoia, but it got the best of me, so I deleted, remastered AGAIN and re-uploaded, which takes 10 days total using DistroKid (highly reccomend). Horrible audio quality was still there.
As I was getting ready to jump out the window, I noticed that my Spotify settings were set to data saver, which caps audio quality at 24kbps. Now, if that ain't the gosh darndest thing, I'll be a goomba's uncle, haw haw haw.
