An Irish folk song in which two men in a pub are talking about their wives. It is generally believed that they work as candle-makers, but it is more likely that they were shoe-makers. The \"waxies' dargle\" was their annual company outing to a pub, often thought to be in the seaside town of Bray, but apparently this would have been too far away for them to afford, and they actually went to Irishtown.
Monto town was a red light district, where it would not be difficult for women to get free drinks!
Lyrics and chords:
.......... D..................... G
Says my auld one to your auld one
................ D............................. A7
“Will you come to the Waxie's dargle?”
.......... D ........................ G
Says your auld one to my auld one
............ A7 ............... D
Sure I haven't got a farthing
....................................... G ...... D
I've just been down to Monto town
........................... G .. A7
To see Uncle McArdle
............. D........................... G
But he wouldn't lend me a half a crown
.......... A7 ......................... D
For to go to the Waxie's dargle.
With me ding di dee di diddley-i-do
And me dee di didley-i di-do
And me ding di dee di diddley-i-do
And me dee di didley-i di-do
What'll you have, will you have a pint
I'll have a pint with you, sir
And if one of us doesn't order soon
We'll be thrown out of the boozer
Says your auld one to my auld one
“Will you come to the Galway races?”
Says my auld one to your auld one
“We could hock my auld lad's braces.”
I went down to Chapel Street
To the Jew man money lenders,
But they wouldn't give me a couple of bob
On my auld lad's red suspenders.
Says my auld one to your auld one
“We've got no beef nor mutton
But if we go down to Monto town
We might get a drink for nothing.”
Here's a nice piece of advice
I got from an auld fish-monger:
When food is scarce and you see the hearse
You'll know you've died of hunger.
