Onto the next cover from History Will Eat Itself, this time an epic progressive post-hardcore and post-rock inspired rendition of one of my personal favourite tracks from Nier Automata, Song of the Ancients featuring my dear friends Lizzie Andrews and Sam King singing the respective Popola and Devola parts.

This particular track being one of my favourites from this soundtrack, I had to give it the treatment it rightly deserves which in turn made this cover clock in at over 9 minutes in length! Fun fact, the second half of this arrangement was devised firstly before the post-hardcore section became a reality. This album being part of my recording project at university, we also had a performance project which also (of course) consisted of Nier and Nier Automata music. My performance project included a select few songs from both soundtracks in the style of post-rock and Songs of the Ancients was the final track on my setlist. When arranging that version for my performance project, I decided to implement that version into my recording project version and thus we have the amalgamation of the two here!

The post-hardcore element of course being influnced by the one and only Dance Gavin Dance (i need to listen to new music, seriously lol) with both rhythm guitars playing technical yet complimentary parts against each other. My favourite part in this arrangement is the middle section where the dual guitars play the Popola and Devola melodies accompanied by a pop-punk style bassline over a 15/8 time signature. The simplicity of the instrumentation in that section always makes me feel happy when I hear it! Also implementing the post-rock style lead over the ending section was so much fun to record!

More Nier Automata coming!
Tune in every Wednesday!
