Around two thousand years ago bread and wine were a pretty common meal, but Jesus took what was a common meal and transformed it into a meaningful and spiritual experience for all believers. Jesus wanted us to remember how he died because everything that Christians are centers around his death. Jesus said,\"This is my body, which is given for you. Do this to remember me. In the same way, he took the cup of wine after supper, saying, \"This cup is the new covenant between God and his peoplean agreement confirmed with my blood. Do this to remember me as often as you drink it.\" For every time you eat this bread and drink this cup, you are announcing the Lord's death until he comes again.
In Paul's letter to the church in Corinth he makes it clear that it is possible to sin against the body and blood of Christ by partaking in the Lord's Supper in an unworthy manner. When believers come together and celebrate the Lord's Supper (Communion) it should be a demonstration of Christian unity within the congregation.
This is why we get right with God and others through Confession, Repentance and Forgiveness.
See 1 Corinthians 11:17-32
