Yaeyama, Miyako and Amami are all part of the Okinawan group of islands and share the somewhat ebullient quality that marks Okinawan music off from most traditional music of the main islands. The range of music on both these recordings is similarly varied, though mostly for solo or small-group vocal with instrumental backings, but the first of them runs to field recordings by a range of performers.
