Stockholm based artist JÁNA today (3/7/20) releases her new single \"Buds\". The new single follows JÁNA's previously released singles \"Wild Roses\" and \"Lotus\", widely praised across the board for her enchanting take on pop-tinged alternative R&B, by the The FADER, COLORS, Lyrical Lemonade, The Line Of Best Fit and more.
New single \"Buds\" swings into focus with a lush, lilting guitar movement, backed by spiralling electronics and soft percussion, but it's JÁNA's sultry, emotive vocals which take centre stage. Co-written with Little Dragon's Yukimi Nagano and co-produced by her Little Dragon drummer Erik Bodin, \"Buds\" stands as another hugely impressive and exciting release from JÁNA.
Speaking on the release, JÁNA said: \"Buds is a song about growth, but more specifically about growing apart from someone you love. Feeling a friction within a relationship without being able to change it. Perhaps at first the differences were what made the relationship stronger, but once the thing holding the relationship together is no longer there, those differences don’t match anymore.\"
It's in her parents’ garage in Uppsala in her home-made studio where JÁNA (real name, Johanna Andrén) creates endless collages of lyrics, images and sound sketches until a distinct narrative for a song emerges. The result, is a unique, irresistible brand of R&B-tinged alternative pop.
Collaborating with Little Dragon during the recording process of debut EP 'Flowerworks', it soon became apparent that the project she was creating was becoming a mediation on relationships as well as a chronicle of her own relationship, from its hopeful beginning to a sudden, abrupt end almost two-years-later.
Working with Little Dragon, JÁNA says, led her to be braver not only sonically but lyrically, too. “My goal is to create a world for each song to live in. I pay a lot of attention to lyrics. I want them to hit hard, but still be art. I want the songs to have a variety of potential interpretations depending on which way the listener hears it,\" she explains.
Comprising 5 tracks of delectable R&B-tinged alternative pop, JÁNA's grasp of melody and her ability to tastefully examine deeply personal subjects is what sets her apart from her peers. Stunning, jazz-inflected R&B at its finest, 'Flowerworks' is an undeniably impressive first release for JÁNA, and one that closes the door on a period of her life.
