Damage Is Done is a story about a broken relationship. Original songs can come about in many ways but with this particular write, the music and more specifically, the main riff in drop-D, is what inspired the rest of the creation. I wrote this song with a friend of mine named Stevie Woodward who you may have seen me play with several times in various vlogs over the last year. She is a very talented singer, writer and guitar player and a friend of mine. Sometimes songwriting starts with a lyric or a chord progression and melody. Sometimes it starts with a drum groove or a story or poem. I dont have a favorite way, or, best way to write music so the process is often different and often takes songs in unexpected directions. Im totally fine with that right now and hopefully, some of you are as well.
This music video was shot pretty much the same way weve been shooting videos for 5 years now. We come up with a loose idea, think of how we might achieve it, and start shooting. We keep trying to make small improvements by way of better gear, better knowledge and practice but mostly, I really think we do it because we have fun. I hope that never changes. As you know, we spend a lot of time in front of our homemade green screen in my basement but this time, we splurged and rented a spot in Nashville that gets used for lots of photo sessions, weddings and portraits. Its a huge, beautiful compound called Cheekwood Estates and Gardens and even though it cost $300 to get the 3 hours to do it, the grounds had lots of the elements and isolated vibe of the lyrics. Im 15 years old and I want to be a musician when I grow up. I try to play many instruments but the one that I feel most at home on is a drum set. I would say the only thing that impresses me more than a great musician is a great songwriter so I also spend some of my time trying to learn the magic of songwriting. I thought it would help me keep focused on music if I started a drum series where I learned a new song every couple of weeks. After 5 years, its now turned into a larger musical search but my goal hasnt changed. Hopefully, I will keep doing it, keep loving music and keep getting better.
