and sticks
and leaves
and trash
alone
lower now
everything
is slower now
unearthed
until the lost
unfolding
unfurls

They awaken alone in the forest.
The air is warm and odorous,
the ground is moist and grimy.
The wind and songs and life of the place has changed.
There are thick, hard, sharp shards of glass strewn around,
and plastics tangled in the vines and roots.
They continue looking up along the trees to the top of the canopy.
They read a dirty, faded, torn ribbon entangled in the branches
– “THANK YOU”.

They slog toward somewhere,
to find someplace different.
Sounds are slow.
The ground bellows.
They sense loss and isolation, grief and despair.
[passerine]:
A clearing,
a field,
wildflowers,
a dead and forgotten tree,
and faces,
earthen faces,
embedded in the ground,
enmeshed in unremembered remnants of detritus.
What happened to these creatures?
What happened in this place?
[buccalcavity]:
The disintegration is occurring.
The decay is creeping.
This burial ground in desuetude.
[tymbal]:
They mourn the bygones,
not knowing how the lost world
became the waste land.
Littered remains of petroleum treasures
– “GOOD YEAR”, “GREAT VALUE”.
The wind resounds desolate laments.
