Dawn of Winter Doomcult Performance full album 1994 doom metal

Doomcult Performances by Germany's Dawn of Winter is simply one of the best doom metal albums to come out of the '90s. Astonishingly however the band chose to not release this due to (perhaps understandably) a dissatisfaction with the production; and, other than a very ltd vinyl-only release (500 copies) almost ten years later in 2003, this superb album remains otherwise unreleased.

I believe this was the last thing Dawn of Winter recorded in which singer Gerrit Mutz took sole responsibility as songwriter which, with all due respect, is a shame as the songwriting on Doomcult Performance remains, I think, some of the best in the genre.

With their 1996 demo, In Servitude to Destiny, guitarist Jรถrg M. Knittel took over most of the writing of the music leaving Gerrit to focus on his role as singer and lyricist.

Twenty two years after first hearing this album I still listen to it with equal admiration at the truly great songwriting on display, at the band's obvious chemistry and charisma and never without a tinge of acute nostalgia!

Dawn of Winter are still active after a quarter of a century. Seek them out, find their records and give this extraordinary and unique band some of the support and recognition they rightly deserve.
