music & production by Jah Ares Chadzinikolau - AristonStudio 2020

cover design by Mirosław Pawłowski

ALEATORIX is a „new Ares” created by sonorism of solo crumblike improvisation and by the air built through personal and coherent narration. This is not a simple, easy music to which the pianist/composer used to head for in the number of his projects, but this is an extremely profoundly thoughtful session in which impression, personal ideas and comprehending modern jazz are presented in its complete form. Ares Chadzinikolau is an artist of immensely aroused horizons, he craves for every note and every music association, playing at the same time with the melody, improvises brilliantly and – not restricting himself to simple rhetoric – he builds his complicated but extraordinarily clear and friendly jazz pathos. Then he gives impetus to his music through impressive, solo improvisations and finally gives the new music remarkably auctorial atmosphere like art nouveau. Hence, the next, after remarkable LUNATIX, Ares’s important album came to life. It is different and certainly the most difficult to realize since it requires extreme composing discipline and virtuoso eloquence of the pianist. @Dionizy Piątkowski

Aleatorism is a fine spun composer’s technique based on the admission of randomness during the performance of musical composition in the range of its certain elements, assuming at the same time, uniqueness of performance itself. The author of the term was Pierre Boulez, and the pioneer of aleatoric music was John Cage. Aleatorism is one of the characteristics of instrumental theater and is associated strictly with surrealism and Dadaism. Subconscious, uncontrolled, spontaneous psychic processes are the source of surrealism. That is why pure randomness becomes the prime mover of artistic activities, while surrealism breaks the form to separate elements so profoundly, that the whole technique enables a composer to create new, unexpected associations, or produce a form of heterogenic, independent elements like collage. Another method is based on building a musical composition out of short, component elements, which are chosen randomly during the performance of a musical composition, much like Stockhausen’s.

Ares Chadzinikolau is an eminent Polish-Greek composer who has created hundreds pieces of music and over 20 records. In the album ALEATORIX he uses a technique of performance inside the grand piano, he explores new areas of sound, polyphony of colors, he uses cultural archetype of human existence decorated with poetic symbols by means of which, he reaches the cosmic universe. He combines sound figures and their projection (vertical, horizontal and diagonal movements) with physical time and space. Musical measures are given meanings which go far beyond the range of sound as such, e.g. the image of Sun or Moon, as presented in the previous album LUNATIX. Ares’s love for the world, his concern about the future of humanity, messiah ornithology, visionary and Homeric epic give individual idea of what is past and what is future. @Nikos Filaktos
