Wheel Of Fortune (Benjamin-Weiss) by Eddie Wilcox & his Orchestra, vocal by Sunny Gale
Though the song had previously been recorded in 1951 by at least three other artists, it was this version that first began to emerge as a mainstream-appeal hit...and prompted Capitol to rush Kay Starr into the recording studio in the middle of the night to cut what would become her career-defining disc. Wilcox had previously been the longtime pianist-arranger with Jimmie Lunceford’s band, while Gale had sung with the Hal McIntyre band prior to her solo career.
Note: in my experience, all issues of this track (both 78 and 45) appear to display substandard recording or pressing quality which progressively deteriorates during the track’s three-minute playing time. This post is about as presentable as I’ve been able to make it sound.
