Tracklist below | Fastilio were an all female improvisation group from Bologna, Italy formed in 1992 that consisted of Daniela Cattivelli, Filomena Forleo, Margareth Kammerer, Olivia Bignardi and Silvia Fanti (later all quite important female impro musicians in Italy). The group loosely came forth from the spherical improv live music collective 'Laboratorio di Musica & Immagine'.
Fastilio almost solely played own compositions and had a very specific intricate avant-garde chamber music attitude and authentic sound in their compositions and improvised music. In 1996 they played the legendary Rock In Opposition festival Ring Ring in Belgrade (Serbia) alongside artists like Boris Kovač, Pierre Bastien and Chris Cutler.
Fastilio is one of the most self-contained, yet complex, humoristic and intricate all female impro outfits of the 90's. Comparable acts are Canadian female improvisers group Justine and for example the Feminist Improvising Group. Within the context of Italian improvisation and Rock In Opposition the music also resembles the group Arigret, the free-jazz music on Materiali Sonori records, or the different impro acts on the Setola di Maiale label active during Italy's 90's.
For Archaic Inventions it's of great importance and one of the pillars of content to seek and present the importance and creative power of \"female-only\" acts and improvised musical output. More to come in the future!

From the original liner notes:
Fastilio is a group of women musicians formed in 1992 and drawing upon experience gained in the musical collective Laboratorio di Musica & Immagine, a group which performs live music to silent movies.
Leaving the films aside, the experience of creating music to images remains central to the work of Fastilio as does the narrative development for the improvvisation. Added to this is a dose of chaotic self-irony which is then blended together with a predilection for limping rhythms, sharp harmonies and a curiosity for the simple physical qualities of the sounds.
When listening to the music of Fastilio, exciting and hilarious stories can be conjured up, creating a network of meaning and yet it is still possible to remain tied to rhytmic constraints and refrains which result in a complex yet simultaneously simple superimposition. Fastilio ranges from the extreme of \"fully-written\" music to \"fully-improvised\" music, - from each musician's affection for the sound of her own instrument to the exchange of roles, from instrumental music to the music of the verbal text, to scores for voices only.
