Pets welcome new friends Senzala, a London duo heavily championed by Richy Ahmed and who have already enjoyed DJ support from the likes of Art Department, despite their crisp freshman stripes. Hot on the heels of their Four Thirty Two debut earlier this summer comes their debut for Pets Recordings; Three tracks of roughened 3am house gold; it’s likely to attract even more attention.
‘Shift’ lives up to its name with a rolling harmonic groove that shines and shades in equal measure as it perpetually twists and turns. The true definition of a deep techy groove, there’s fluid in the machines and funk in the movement. There are very few corners of the wide world of house that won’t benefit from this purring through your set.
What follows is a heartfelt homage to the legacy of NYC and a love letter to all warehouses and empty inner-city spaces that have ever held an acid house party: ‘Culture’. Chugging Vasquez-style drums with momentum adding with every rhythmic element, sudden flashes of diva sugar and rising synths creeping up mid-way, this is an ageless piece of house that could hypnotise a floor 30 years in either direction.
Last but not least, we have ‘Midnight 20’. A deeper affair built around a much slinkier groove where a percussive foundation leaves perfect space for breezy chords to palpitate and rise gradually. With textures and tones nodding to both London and Detroit, once again there’s a strong sense of timelessness and versatility at play that belies Senzala’s foundation status. Their second high-profile EP in less than six months, we suspect these foundations are about to build on in a major way, very soon. Sleeping on this is not advised.
