One of the main Brazilian rap and hip hop groups, Racionais MC's appeared in the outskirts of São Paulo in the 80's, introducing a political speech in favor of the outcast population from big Brazilian cities.

In 1997, the rap group inaugurates its own label Cosa Nostra Phonographic with the release of the album Sobrevivendo no Inferno (Surviving in Hell), selling over 1.5 million copies independently
