American band Tangerine was the brainchild of former Crash frontman Mark Dumais. Amongst its members were guitarist Kurt Ralske, who would go on to form Ultra Vivid Scene and release three albums for 4AD; drummer Byron Guthrie, who later joined Ralske in Ultra Vivid Scene; and Bill Carey, who went on to form fellow Creation band Something Pretty Beautiful. Joining Dumais on vocals in Tangerine was Julie Davids. The two singers were backed by heavy dance keyboards and beats.
Tangerine signed to Creation in 1989. Along with Creation, they seemed to be the act that could achieve Alan McGee's ambition of making Creation a label like Atlantic that combined the best of rock and dance. Tangerine got nothing wrong but their timing. Unfortunately, they weren't indie enough nor were they were dance enough to satisfy late 1980's compartmentalised audiences.
Sadly, Mark Dumais died in 1992 of an AIDS-related illness. Rest in peace, Mark.
