Commenting on this now rare and long out-of-print album, Alan Pedder of Wears the Trousers Magazine writes that \"[Anaïs] recorded her debut album, 2002’s self-released The Songs They Sang When Rome Fell, in a single day. Her reluctance to really acknowledge the record these days is, she says, a hangover from wearing her influences a little too plainly\" (\"words in edgeways with anaïs mitchell,\" 11/15/2007). It is a shame, however, that Anaïs has striven in the last fifteen years or so to erase this album from her discography; any more serious fans of hers will admire the uniquely raw songwriting and sparse production of the record. As such, I am attempting to upload The Song They Sang . . . When Rome Fell to YouTube for as long as it can stay up so that other fans of Anaïs who do not have the album may hear and appreciate it. Accompanying the songs are pictures from the original CD.
