For many or most residents of England, this was THE sentimental ballad of WW2, first recorded by Vera Lynn in 1939 (a version far different from her later remake heard over the mushroom cloud of “Dr. Strangelove”). Mitch Ayres was among the first of the U.S. bands to release a version in America.
