Stu G. Nevitt, born March 11, 1953 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, was a drummer/percussionist/composer and founding member of the Grammy award winning world progressive jazz band, SHADOWFAX.
Nevitt began playing drums at the age of 4, having learned the drum rudiments from his father, also a drummer. Throughout high school, he played in a variety of rock bands and orchestras before heading to the University of Miami to study music.
In the early '70s, Nevitt moved to Chicago where he woodwind player Chuck Greenberg, bassist Phil Maggini and guitarist G.E. Stinson. They invited him to join their experimental music group named after Gandalf's horse, \"Shadowfax,\" from J.R.R. Tolkien's novel, Lord of the Rings. The group went on to record 10 albums and released two greatest-hits packages. Shadowfax was awarded a Grammy in 1998 for the album Folksongs for a Nuclear Village. Upon the death of Chuck Greenberg in 1995, the band quit touring and performing.
After Shadowfax broke up, Nevitt continued to perform and record, working with violinist Kim Angelis, as well as releasing his first solo project, The Marion Kind, in 2007.
Stu Nevitt died on March 15, 2008 due to complications from diabetes and heart disease at his home in Rio Rancho, N.M.; he was 55.
It's still hard for me to play this album. But with Stu gone and it being out or print it deserves to be heard, the only full-length solo album Stu managed to put out, less than a year before his passing. I doubt Stu had an enemy in this (or any other) world. A great guy. Too bad we never got to meet in person... RIP Stu...
