• My first exposure to The Gizmos was listening to Bloodstains Across The Midwest. An excellent compilation overall but upon initial listens seemed prone to silliness. With comical songs like “Human Garbage Disposal” (That goofy ass “I’m the Gizmo that eats the most” bit is still quoted at least once a month in my house.) and “I’m A Drunk” (not quoted ever) it seems the midwest doesn’t take itself all too seriously. That being said, there is a strange undercurrent of patriotism in punk from there and I suspect a lot of that trickled down indirectly from parent to punker in the old days. “Amerika First” isn’t immune to it even though the main focus is lampooning that very notion. Or is it? There is a lengthy explanation on the back about how the main Gizmo, Ken Highland, had enlisted in the Marines that year but all of the text included is written in such a way that anyone without a keen eye would take this EP as a fine slab of Americana as pure as ol’ Johnny Cougar himself. The Marines thing is fact though. I read an interview where KH breaks down the entire complicated geographical mess of his careers and musical output. Until I read that I didn’t realize he was the same Ken Highland as O. Rex and Afrika Korps (which I always thought was related to Savage Republic for some reason and then noticed that they were in fact Africa Corps, C’s not K’s). Nice to learn new things.
