The origins of the novelty song, at least on the British side of the Atlantic, lie in the music-hall tradition which began in the mid-Victorian era. The late Fifties saw a growing awareness of the music-hall tradition among a new generation of young comedy artists and singers. Ironically, this coincided with the demise of music hall as a viable outlet for entertainers, largely because of the growing popularity of recorded music and, especially, television. Our collection of novelty songs also hails from the mid twentieth century and is guaranteed to raise a smile.
