Dubbed as the \"Philippine's Foremost Tenor\", the name Don David, like most of the very popular Filipino singers from the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's is nowadays almost entirely forgotten and unknown to the present generation of Filipinos.
Presented here is one of his very famous English recording, the song \"Loveliest Night of the Year\" , accompanied by the Bataan Concert Orchestra as conducted by Ariston Avelino. Audio from a vintage 78 RPM shellac record (\"Loveliest Night of the Year, Don David, Tenor, with the Bataan Concert Orchestra, Conducted by Ariston Avelino,\" Bataan Records, Special Series, BA-RS 701A Red Seal, Philippine Recording System, Manila, Philippines, Undated).
The music of this popular song \"The Loveliest Night of the Year\" was first published as a waltz called \"Sobre las olas\" (\"Over the Waves\") in 1888 written by José Juventino Policarpo Rosas Cadenas (b.25 January 1868- d. 9 July 1894), a Mexican composer and violinist.
In 1950 the music was adapted by Irving Aaronson with lyrics by Paul Francis Webster for the movie 'The Great Caruso'. It was sung by Mario Lanza and became one of the most popular songs of 1951 reaching No 3 in the US Billboard Charts.
