A great little post-rock album, just in time for final exam season. Featuring members of Lungfish and Arbouretum, the self-titled record from Human Bell showcases brilliant guitar work and no-gimmick songwriting that separate it from the horde of boring post-rock works released in the past 20 years. An alt-country flare underlies the entire album, with twangy guitars that are a perfect blend of engaging and repetitive, and are layered intelligently to give and take the listener’s attention as the songs proceed and develop. Thankfully, though, the tracks never crescendo into clichéd “loud parts” or breakdowns — instead, they pick up where 90s classics like “EP+6”-era Mogwai left off, choosing to find a mood and stick with it until the group deems it appropriate to move on. Also, \"Human Bell\" is an excellent name for a band.
