Page 55 (Ft. Aidan Most)

This was the first piece I composed that is on this album. A song I wrote for Clarinet and Cornet. I was originally going to perform it with Aidan at our high School's \"Jazz Night\" but that was cancelled so we never did. It has the instrumentation of early jazz but the chords and style of bebop. It is called \"Page 55\" after the song \"Blues for Alice\" which is on page 55 in the \"Real Book\"

Wave

Composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim

One of my favourite Jobim Songs from one of my favourite albums. It features Bass flute and Bari Sax and has a mixed woodwind ensemble consisting of Piccolo, Flute, Soprano Sax and Alto Sax for the backgrounds. A fun fact about this song is that it is actually a 12 bar blues disguised as a Bossa with an added bridge.

Excited Blues for Clark

I wrote this song for an assignment for my piano group lessons. We were asked to compose a 16 bar melody that consisted of 4 four-bar phrases. The first phrase had to end on an unstable scale degree. The second phrase had to be similar to the first but had to end on a stable scale degree. The third phrase had to be completely different and the fourth phrase had to end the song. We were also given a theme and mine was \"Excited\". It features me on Piccolo and Soprano Sax. I picked those instruments to their similar tone colour.

Dialogo

Composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim

This song was one of the first songs I heard a recording of that featured bass flute. It is off the album \"Wave\". It has a solo bass flute, a tenor sax to replace the original trombone, with three flutes and four bass flutes to replace the string section in the original.

Waltz for Charlie

This song is a playful waltz that is dedicated to my cat, Charlie. It is also a blues and is in 3/4 (or waltz) time. It features me on Flute and Clarinet.

Blue Monk

Composed by Thelonius Monk

This song is arranged for an ensemble I call a \"Woodwind Big Band\". It consists of three flutes, a bass flute, three clarinets, a bass clarinet, two Alto Saxes, two Tenor Saxes, and bari sax.

Ballad for Carol

This song is for a flute choir. The arrangement is similar to the song \"If you never come to me\" from my last album. It uses the chords from \"Misty\" for the A section and my own progression for the B Section. It is named after my granny (Carol). There are four flutes (fourth doubling on bass flute) and one bass flute and has solos for bass flute and flute.

Spain

Composed by Chick Corea

This song is a samba that features me on Flute and Bass Flute. It is a really fun song to listen to and to play.

Prairie Chicken Blues (Ft. Cyrus Felstrom-Stenka)

This is a very difficult bird blues for a sax section. It also has Cyrus Felstrom-Stenka on Tenor Sax for the song. Also, I do a clarinet solo. Of all of the songs on this album, this one took the most time to make. It gets its name from the provincial bird of my province, the prairie chicken.

Manha de Carnaval (A day in the life of a fool)

Composed by Luiz Bonfa

This song is a slow bossa. What inspired me to do this song was a video I saw on youtube where a guy played this song on a bass flute. It is a very mellow song and that fits the tone colour of the bass flute and clarinet very well. It is also sometimes incorrectly called \"Black Orpheus\"

Skip Blues (Ft. Aidan Most and Cyrus Felstrom-Stenka)

This song is a modal blues inspired by the Miles Davis classic \"All Blues\". For the bass line, it takes one melody and alters it to keep it interesting. It features Aidan Most on Trumpet, Cyrus Felstrom-Stenka on Tenor Sax and me on Flute, Soprano Sax, Alto Sax, Clarinet, Bass Clarinet and Bari Sax. There is a music video for this song at youtu.be/6-2ymYDfmfs

Tema Jazz

Composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim

This song is from one of my favourite albums, Tide. It is arranged for 3 flutes doubling on bass flute and a Tenor Sax.

Samba on a Song in 25 (Ft. Aidan Most)

This song is based on an earlier song I wrote that was called “Blues in 25”. Aidan plays trumpet on this song. It used to be in 25/8 but now is a 4/4 samba. It features Flute, Soprano Sax, Clarinet and Trumpet but has backgrounds by an Alto sax, Tenor Sax and Bari Sax. You can listen to “Blues in 25” here: tinyurl.com/BluesIn25

So Nice (Summer Samba)

Composed by Marcos Valle

This song is a fun tune that features me on flute, clarinet and alto sax. It is loosely based on the version by Walter Wanderley
