Learning a music instrument is hard, doing it without any proper instructor is harder, self-taught and releasing a Jazz piano album is in entirely different universe. Ryo Fukui did that at age 22.
He did not release much of his works. He released only 5 albums during his 40 years career. In one of his interview, he said \"I'm constantly trying to improve myself as a piano player. Today I'll try to be better than yesterday, and tomorrow I'll try to be better than today.\" He was never satisfied of himself. This might be a reason.
The album you are listening is the last album before he passed away in 2016. The recording took place at his jazz club, Slowboat, which is an accumulated experience he and his band have performed at this club for 10 years. Slowboat is still operating in his hometown, Sapporo.
His 48 minutes letter is special to me. I believe that you will feel special after you listen to this album, both A and B sides.
