RUDOLF HINDEMITH

HANS LOFER

Rudolf Hindemith was the younger brother of Paul Hindemith. He was born on September 1st, 1900 in Hanau [Germany] and he died on October 10th, 1974 in Munich. He was a Cello virtuoso of great fame; together with his brother Paul [who played the Viola] he was a member of the famous AMAR Quartet. At the age of nineteen Richard Strauss asked him to become the first Cellist of the Vienna State Opera [Vienna Philharmonic]. He was also a most gifted conductor, first at the Berlin Radio and later as head of the Philharmonic on Krakow [Poland]. He also conducted the world premieres of various works of his brother Paul. After 1945 he devoted his time mainly to the teaching of string instruments in Munich.

His output as a composer was far smaller than the one of his brother; in fact, he had no intention to compete with the extremely industrious Paul. His main works consist of one Opera, \"Des Kaisers Neue Kleider\" [after Hans-Christian Andersen's tale], which was premiered and performed at various German Opera Houses, a Concerto for Piano and Orchestra, the Six Sonatinas for Piano, smaller works for Piano and works for Chamber groups.

It was after World War II that personal reasons made him change his name to 'Hans Lofer', but we would like to remember his name in the tradition of this god-given family: Rudolf Hindemith.
