A whole new experience in meditative music.
FM3 is a beijing-based duo of Christiaan Virant and Zhang Jian. Which Christiaan Virant moved to China in 1980s to study Chinese Music and culture. In 1999, Virant joined Zhang Jian to form FM3; a project where the pair could experiment with music that combined the sound of Chinese classical instruments with modern digital techniques. Starting out as \"the ambient, chill-out band that played in the back room\" of Beijing clubs and evolving into a \"meditative\" sound.

In 2005, FM3 began work on a small musical loop player dubbed the Buddha Machine. Roughly the size of a pack of cigarettes the device has only one toggle switch to cycle through samples, a combined power and dial and an integrated speaker.

It happened also Lona Record 10th anniversary, which Lona Record is an independent label in Hong Kong that focuses on producing Alternative / Experimental music, and this is also the first kickoff show co-organized by 20α, a proposed non-profit organization that focuses on the development of experimental music performance and pedagogy in Hong Kong. We are happy to present FM3 Live in Hong Kong on 6 September 2013. The Live show will take place at the Hidden Agenda Live House (2A, Wing Fu Industrial Bldg, 15-17 Tai Yip Street, Kwun Tong). FM3 will be performing especially on their created instrument, Buddha Machine.

About FM3:

FM3 is the Beijing-based music duo of Christiaan Virant and Zhang Jian. They are considered among the pioneers of electronic music in China. Since 1999, Virant and Zhang have been making meditative music by combining the sounds of Chinese classical instruments with modern digital techniques.

They are best known for the design and production of the \"Buddha Machine\" loop-player. This small music box was named one of the best music releases of 2005 by the New York Times. In 2011, The Washington Post put the third-generation Buddha Machine at the top of its buying guide for music lovers. \"It's bliss,\" the paper said.

Since its introduction in 2005, the Buddha Machine has won global praise for its novel approach to music enjoyment and has been used in hundreds of recording and performance projects from a wide range of artists. The original Buddha Machine was released in 2005. It features nine tracks and comes in 7 colours. Buddha Machine 2.0 was released in November 2008. It offers an additional 9 pieces of hypnotic music and adds a pitch-control, which allows you to change the speed of the music to suit your mood. Buddha 3, dubbed Chan Fang 禅房, was released in winter 2010. It boasts higher audio quality and four long loops of Chinese classical music composed and recorded on the ancient Gu Qin.

In addition to the Buddha Machine, FM3 creates music for film, television, and multi-media art exhibits, and has an extensive discography on various labels around the world.

FM3 has been called \"the most prominent experimental act in China\" by US magazine Grooves. The UK magazine The Wire calls FM3's live performances \"meditative,\" \"soothing\" and \"engagingly intimate.\"
