Hair Of Gold (Sunny Skylar) by Jerry Murad’s Harmonicats, with vocal ensemble
It was on the small Chicago labels Universal and Vitacoustic that Jerry Murad’s trio first gained fame (“Peg O’ My Heart” 1947); and their (uncharacteristically) vocal release of this Sunny Skylar tune from the western film “Singin’ Spurs” was a #15 jukebox hit, trailing the top-ten Gordon MacRae version.
This was a “recording ban” release, but unlike the 1942-44 recording strike by the American Federation Of Musicians, during which no musical instruments (other than the human voice) were to be utilized to accompany vocal recordings, the 1948 recording ban did loosen things up a bit by allowing in the studio such “unsophisticated” tools as ukuleles and harmonicas.
