The House Of The Rising Sun (Price) by The Animals, produced by Mickie Most

The first American hit for Eric Burdon’s group was one of the year’s top-selling British imports, based upon the traditional folk ballad and arranged by Animals keyboardist Alan Price.

NOTE: If you were not around in 1964 to hear this million-selling--but shortened--three-minute version on the radio or on your home phonograph (or even if you were), you might be surprised to hear it now, as we’ve become so accustomed to the longer 4:30 track that has been reissued and played almost exclusively over the past 50+ years. Though the long version was issued on the UK single, the top-40 radio industry in America was less likely at that time to consider adding records that ran much over three minutes….thus this edited version which cut one verse and some of the instrumental passages, including the cold ending.

U.S. Pop Chart Peaks: Billboard, Cash Box & Record World #1 - UK Peak: #1 (the extended version)

THE 1964 HITS ARCHIVE - Here in one place, a good-quality library of original-release-version best-sellers and songs which made an impact that were either released or enjoyed a major chunk of their popularity within the calendar year 1964 (some were recorded in 1963).
