Half of the tracks on 'Motive' were built upon live recordings made on the Doghouse Audio Mobile Unit, then overdubbed & edited in the studio, alá Frank Zappa. The other half were realized entirely at one Doghouse Audio Laboratory or another (Bobdog changed locations several times in the late 90s). The album was realized over a period of a year and a half starting in 1997, sifting through piles of live recordings & manipulating, tweaking and building studio pieces. \"No synths\" just appears randomly in the CD's liner notes. We were really proud of that!

Ambient guru Robert Rich added the benefit of his bat-like hearing by doing the final mastering at Soundscape Studios.

Featuring six ethereal tracks, mostly instrumental and entirely hypnotic, 'Motive' ranges from the minimal 'Jehovah rises Early', through the Ummagummesque 'Moth Canal', right up to the maddening 'Gra' (a full throttle improvisational take on Elliott Carter's piece for solo clarinet). Interestingly, James Cobb is in the audience at the Green Onion during 'Gra's recording but didn't started playing in the band until early 1998.

The proper name for track 3 is: 'Solo for soprano saxophone and electronic tape (transcribed for B-flat clarinet and two electric guitars)' and was composed in 1986 by Mladen Milicivec. It was recorded at a Soli Chamber Ensemble performance at Ruth Taylor Concert Hall, Trinity University. Sidlo & Bob accompanied Stephanie and it was a hoot to see a Marshall half stack in the Ruth Taylor!

Street cred.

\"I listened to this on the airplane and was very impressed. I actually slept and had the most amazing dreams. I really like this CD.\" - Mark Spybey (D.V.O.A., Zoviet France)

More street cred.

Recorded at Doghouse Audio Laboratory (Compound, Chateaux and Mobile Unit), the Hallway of KSYM 90.1, The Green Onion Lounge and Ruth Taylor Concert Hall

Tracks 1 & 2 recorded by Eugene T. Ng, all others recorded, mixed and manipulated by Bob Dog Catlin and the the other Pseudo Buddhists at Doghouse Audio Laboratory
