This is a record I first posted in 2010, but it's such a good one, it deserves a rerun. It was also one of the many wonderful records I won on Jesse Stewart's Green River Records auction over the previous 35 years, and I'm going to post the same tribute to him and his son Jesse as I did ten years ago as Jesse continues in his tradition:
The Green River Records Auction was founded back in 1965 by Jesse's father Mike Stewart and operated for many years in Gardiner, Maine before moving to Mill Spring, NC in about 2000. Sadly, Mike died suddenly towards the end of 2008 right after returning from a long record-buying trip and coincidentally during the week right after his latest auction, I think #37, ended. His son Jesse stepped right in and has continued to operate this fine auction. I've been receiving lists for at least 35 years and could never count the number of good records I've gotten from this auction. Back in 1995, it had on it only the second listing of the Plantation Serenaders When Erastus Plays His Old Kazoo I'd seen since 1970 on one of Harry L. Lane's lists. Both times I missed it by about $7.00--it went for $17 in 1970 and $171 in 1995. I lost another one from Kurt Nauck's auction in about 2002, then finally got one a year or so ago from eBay. The paper lists always had a cover that depicted a beautiful, vintage record sleeve from the 20's or a vintage record or music advertisement of the era. About 1-1/2 years before he died, Mike converted solely to on-line auctions because of the massive savings in costs.
