Here's my jazz tenor saxophone cover of Lavender Town from Pokmon RBY! I'm Sab and I love jazz and video games, so now I make covers that combine two of my favorite things!
So this cover was definitely interesting to work on. I shifted around a lot of projects since it took me awhile to think of something to do for Halloween. This is my third cover of Lavender Town, I just really like this song. I love the harmonies and how open the tune is, which allows me to do a lot to it.
I was definitely inspired by Mark Camphouse's Watchmen, Tell Us of the Night since I just played it in wind ensemble. It's such a hauntingly beautiful piece, similar to Lavender Town, even though the themes of each are very different. I also was inspired by concepts I learned recently in atonal music theory, using quartal and quintal harmony to have an open sound, similar to the repeating opening motive to Lavender Town. I play around a lot with those 4 pitches in that repeating motive, having it form a lot of the chords I used in the piece.
