Conceived and produced by local comedian and musician Jesse Bettis, Portland Smiles is a tribute to the uniqueness of the original Smiley Smile recordings as seen through the lens of a new generation of artists. Featuring tracks by established Portland stars and up-and-comers alike, the Portland Smiles versions of the songs vary greatly in their approach but portray a common spirit that is uniquely Portland. From Collin Jenkins’ spot on indie rock makeover of “Heroes and Villains” and Adam Brock’s acoustic take on “Good Vibrations” to Typhoon’s haunting, minimal version of “Whistle In”, and Radiation City’s vibey “Little Pad” the eclectic and haphazard approaches to recording Portland Smiles are a tribute to the frenetic, tattered genius of the original recordings.
