Drawing upon the band’s eclectic range of cumulative musical experience, ‘Cynical Love’ delivers what could have easily been yet another retelling of the classic love-hate relationship story but with a metaphorical kick in the teeth. Rather than getting bogged down in stereotypes the song instead manages to differentiate itself with punchy riffs, compelling lyrics, an attention-grabbing chorus and a healthy dose of attitude; as a result the lasting impression of this expertly-delivered tale is not one of sorrow, nor anguish, but rather passion and to some extent, an underlying element of rage both internally and externally fed. The music itself, large in sound yet specific in its use of detail, seems to further reinforce this idea of gritty resilience whilst caught in the sway of an intricate, multi-faceted and ultimately confusing situation.
