Tokubei, a young orphan merchant clerk in Osaka, was so honest and steady that the marchant owner wanted Tokubei to marry his wife's niece.
Tokubei refused the proposal because he'd been love with a courtesan, Ohatsu.
But the owner had had marriage agreements with Tokubei's stepmother, providing her large amounts of money. He demanded Tokubei to give that money back.
Tokubei went to his village and managed to get the money back from his stepmother. After that, he loaned the money to his friend Kuheiji, because Kuheiji said he's going bunkrupt.
But after the due of the debt, Kuheiji denied the existence of the debt. Tokubei realized that he had been perfectly swindled. He tried to attack Kuheiji, but Kuheiji and his followers defeated him, and abused as a swindler.
There's no way to prevent Tokubei and Ohatsu from indignity and parting, except for suicide to live together in another life...
