Leatherback and Loggerhead Sea Turtles are listed as endangered under the Species at Risk Act. One of the key threats to sea turtles in Canadian marine waters is the risk of entanglement in fishing gear. Once entangled, leatherbacks risk injury or death. Adult mortality is especially detrimental to leatherback populations given their long lifespan, slow maturity, and gaps of 2-3 years between nesting events. The risk of bycatch and entanglement can be mitigated provided fishers are knowledgeable about Leatherback and Loggerhead Sea Turtle biology and behavior and have the tools to safely interact with them. This project will provide educational materials and disentanglement tools to fishers along the south shore of Newfoundland to enable them to safely interact with Leatherback Sea Turtles. The project will also engage fishers by asking for input and feedback on tool design, ideas for gear deployment adjustments to reduce the risk of bycatch, and best practices to be shared throughout the industry.
