The song's lyrics were originally so explicitly sexual that the song had to be rewritten in the studio in order to even be deemed tame enough for the Rhythm and Blues market. A competing pop version by Pat Boone reached the charts at about the same time, peaking at #14. Little Richard's original version was listed on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time at #43. The song was declared the #1 most influential song of all time on Mojo Music Magazine's list of the 100 Records that Changed the World. The opening line screamed by Little Richard was called the greatest rock lyric of all time by Rolling Stone.
This is the original HIT MONO MIX released on Specialty XSP-561 when this was a HUGE hit on AM Top 40 radios tattoos in the fall and winter of '55-'56.
