``“I would not be me without Clare Fischer” – Herbie Hancock
Grammy-winning composer, arranger, band leader and multi-instrumentalist, Dr Douglas Clare Fischer has a special place in jazz and pop history. Initially a player in The Hi-Los band, he quickly moved on to arrange music for Donald Byrd and Dizzy Gillespie before making his mark with the influential Latin/Jazz standards “Morning” and “Pensativa”. By the 70s he was in hot demand. He capitalised on his widespread appeal by running a parallel career, working with Prince, Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson and numerous other pop-stars.
In 1975 he joined a group headed by vibraphonist Cal Tjader, an accomplished Latin jazz musician. The experience inspired Fischer to bring together a collection of Latin musicians under the “Salsa Picante” umbrella. This album celebrates their exploration of Salsa, Bossa Nova and Latin-tinged jazz. Fischer masterfully engineers a unique sound with his daring Rhodes and electric piano work. He’s joined by Poncho Sanchez and Alex Acuna who manipulate bongas, congas and timabales into a percussive whirlwind – the bread for Fischer’s meaty filling. Acuna also pipes in on the flute from time to time, supported by David Tronsco’s bass and Rick Zunigar’s guitar strokes. Together, it’s a sensational result.
There’s a mixture of songs on the album – from silky Latin delights to slightly frantic pieces to more uptempo funky sounds. ``
