A great album, from a marvelous songwriter - and guitar player - who wrote, produce and played the majority of instruments in this beauty... The son of Johnny Otis...
(tracklist below)
An early bloomer - Shuggie - started playing the guitar at the age of 2, and by the time he was 11, he was playing professionally in his father's band, disguised with sunglasses and a fake mustache, so that he could play in after-hours nightclubs... At 18 (?) he started recording this album, mostly by himself... It took him 3 years, but it came out a true Masterpiece...
A varied and original mix of Soul, Funk, Jazz, Electronica and what else, in a Great collection of songs, beautifully arranged & produced... With some nasty rhythms, funky grooves and tasty melodies, it's really a Shuggie to the Ears...
It's really hard to understand why this wasn't a major hit, and remains in obscurity...
But the truth is - if you can believe it - Shuggie was thrown out of his label (Epic Records), after this one... Unbelievable... \"Oh, you've just made one of the best albums ever... No way... We wanted you to have made 3 bad ones instead... You gotta go...\"
There are reasons that even reason does not understand... : /
