A new Bríi album has arrived, to add another landmark release to a year not even three months done. Those familiar with this artists’ projects in Bríi and Kaatayra will already have an idea of what to expect – but this will surpass even the highest of expectations.
Two untitled tracks of equal duration, both 28:12 each. A minimalist presentation of a maximally psychedelic experience, of deeply engrossing and all-consuming trance-inducing music.
This album features some remnants of the Cascadian atmospheric black metal in which the project started (and Kaatayra seems to be continuing more fully), which make their influence felt in the moments of savage riffing that erupt in sporadic bursts, flashing out of the electronic mist or building up to accompany the peaks, and in the harsh vocals that punctuate the tropical fug at judiciously timed intervals.
The majority of this album is owned by the percussive, tribal rhythms of minimal hypnogogic techno, recalling the kinds of artists releasing on labels like Winged Sun, Leaving, Not Not Fun around the 2010s - High Wolf, Stag Hare, Iibiis Rooge, Stellar Om Source, Sun Araw….heady, tribal ambient, and psychically elevating, and among the most progressive music to involve black metal.
