Study no. 15a [for Pauline Oliveros]
*for Clapping and Vocalizing* [Variations are possible]
Inspired in no small part by Oliveros' music and writings [particularly 'Software for People'], and time spent in conversation, I wrote, and presented this piece, for Oliveros' Deep Listening seminar at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the Spring semester of 2013.
This is a short demonstration of the score, which in performance would run as a persistent [never-ending/never-repeating] application.
Performance instructions:
Each performer watches one of the 15 circles throughout.
When a red circle converges on a performer's circle, clap once. The quality of the clap (loud, quiet, etc.) should be varied.
When the small circle appears at '12 O'Clock', sing a tone until it has made one full revolution. Pitch and dynamic envelope are open. One version might be to pick a pitch that is not already being sung, and to start quietly, crescendo to MF by '6 O'Clock', and decrescendo by '12 O'Clock'. Other versions can be determined before performance.
