Don Costa – “Soulful Strut” (Mercury) 1969

Written by Eugene Record and Sonny Sanders. Arranged and produced by Don Costa.

From the 1969 album, “The Don Costa Concept”

One of the 60s’ premier arrangers and producers with one of a number of albums he made as a recording artist. The album consisted of Don’s interpretations of various hits of the day, including “Hey Jude” and “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me”.

“Soulful Strut” had been a #3 US hit for Young Holt Unlimited. Their version took the backing track for Barbara Acklin’s “Am I The Same Girl” and replaced her vocals with a piano.

Don Costa, along with Teddy Randazzo, was responsible for reviving the career of Little Anthony & The Imperials in the mid-60s, with hits such as “Goin’ Out My Head” and “Hurt So Bad”.

Sadly we lost Don Costa in 1983 at the all-too-young age of 57.
