The Critters were a well-known late 1960's band from Northern New Jersey (and metropolitan NYC) Mr. Dieingly Sad was the first song lead singer Don Ciccone composed for the band and not long after it's great regional success, dj's around the country picked up on the buzz and it went onto achieve national, then international acclaim in the late summer/early fall 1966. Being from New Jersey myself--and a kid at the time--we were very proud of both Frank Valli & The Four Seasons & The Critters (all hometown \"joisey\" boys who, as the local colloquialism goes, \"done good\" lol)
(remember this pre-dates the phenomenal success of TWO OTHER Garden State kids you MAY have heard of : \"The Boss\" himself, Bruce Springsteen & Bon Jovi)...
The Critters only had one other \"follow-up\" single, their moderately successful cover of The Lovin' Spoonful's \"Younger Girl\" in '67. Before the release of their second album, Don Ciccone was drafted into army and served in Vietnam (eventually returning home safely), but this extended absence caused the Critters to break up without their lead man present. They never were able to duplicate the great success of their first single (what we 60's kids called \"45\"), \"Mr Dieingly Sad\" The song has become a great classic of that era.
