\"Take a listen and you'll hear soul, class, sophistication, Big Band swing, r&b all rolled into one.
The Spinners were a definite asset to Motown-even if Motown didn't always treat the group as such. Funky-Smooth, Old skool even back then, the group brought their doo-wop skills from the previous decade and applied it to the growing soul and pop stylings music was coming to.
When combined with the ever-amazing writers at Motown and the beyond-compare backing of the Funk Brothers, how on earth could the Spinners miss? \"Sweet Thing\" was one of the first tracks by the group to have that undeniably special Detroit Sound.
It's hard to put into words how the Spinners sound- you'll notice the vocals aren't necessarily spread from low-end bass to high-end tenor like the Temptations; for the most part, the vocals were a steel-belted blend of bass/baritone and maybe first tenor. This gave the group's sound a bit more density.
\"Sweet Thing\" had a unique drum pattern- the drums had a sort of swing-n-skip feel while the handclaps did the job of keeping the strict tempo. Classy, brassy horns sound throughout and sound like they'd be more at home in a supper club or broadway score- still, they absolutely rock!
Not one of the big Motown hits people quickly recall, still, it has the winning Hit Bound sound every Motown fan loves!\"
