Zeit - Drangsal (Full Album) Drangsal is the latest album from German commandos Zeit. Their mixture of bleak traditional black metal and some sludge/doom elements is still in place. The goal of Zeit is to blend contrasting elements, melancholy and aggression, pain and pleasure. A lot of bands throw these kinds of statements out and it often comes across like a pale attempt at making sense of a whole lot of noise. One spin through “Drangsal” shows that these Germans have an idea how to work their heady conceits into solid heavy music. The typical tremolo picks and the pummeling blasts can be found here as well and build the basis of Zeit’s music. While each black metal band puts a lot of emphasis on building a sinister atmosphere they have gone even a bit further compared to their peers.

Melancholic and trippy guitar harmonies are often dwelling in the background while the stoic and hypnotic basic chords are responsible for a dense atmosphere. The fascinating chord progressions are accompanied by melodic trademark lead lines defining the character of each single song. The speed and the intensity are kept high over the majority of the album with only a few passages where the tempo is slowed down and the listener gets a chance to breathe. However, the memorable harmonies and the fantastic hooks make the record a very enjoyable affair.

Beside the spectacular guitar work also the rhythm section has to be mentioned. The drumming is precise following the main patterns of each song and highlighting several sections where an extra portion of intensity is needed. Most of the time it is kept pretty laid-back underlining the quite stoic and atmospheric nature of the music. A gloomy atmosphere is something that is very important for this record and thankfully it has been taken care that things never get too hectic or chaotic to destroy the mood. Although the instrumental skills are obvious most emphasis has been put on a stringent and clearly structured songwriting.

The vocals delivered by Fur are perfectly fitting coming across desperate and haunting. The production is thick and heavy but there is enough room to breathe for each instrument. Despite the rawness no detail has been lost in the mix and can be noticed while carefully listening. Drangsal is a must-have for collectors of aggressive yet captivating music.
