“Drug Beard debuts with a 9 song tape/digital combo that offers up heavy fuzz with a melodic buzz. Recorded during a global pandemic with minimal resources, the feel is that of early Sub Pop releases: songs over slickness; substance (and, apparently, substances) over style; fuzz pedals everywhere.

Side A starts off with the slacker sludge pop of “Necropolis Now” and “Burnride Forever” before riding a moon buggy across the space desert dune rock of “Hang Gliding With Hawks” and the sprawling “Buried on the Moon.” The side ends with the churning album centerpiece “Wall to Wall Satan,” where vocalist/drummer John Busher is at his rock and roll, 70s B.O.C.-inspired best.

Side B is a much darker affair, starting with the filthy swamp sludge of “Hessian Gynecology” then moving into the blackened doom of “Plague Doctor.” Perhaps the strangest brew on the album, “Von Kaiser,” an ode to the Nintendo classic Punch-Out, manages to combine glacial-paced drones with Beach Boys-esque three-part harmonies. Closing out the album is “Fuckdozer,” a wild, irreverent, and thunderous ride through genres in which guitarists and songwriters Jeff Gallagher and Todd Molinaro riff out and show off their influences, with former laying down some canyon slide on the desolate intro and the latter playing a searing, Zappa-style solo over the triumphant outro.
